The Storyteller

a crumpled napkin. The chatter stalls, a warm silence, companionable. Someone asks a question revealing earnest curiousity. The storyteller stretches in his seat, knowing that his audience is ready to listen.

The first story comes forth, describing a tale of hilarious mishaps while navigating the cultural minefield. The storyteller recalls miscommunications that led to periods of confusion and frustration, but resolving in laughter and friendship. Another tale, this one more serious, describing political tensions and the efforts made to keep his family safe. Yet another, about his journey between one town and the next being complicated by tires blowing out, darkness setting in and fuel running out. The figures around the table listen attentively and provide gestures and noises that motivate the storyteller to keep going.

Overcoming challenges and obstacles. Determination to keep moving forward despite opposition. Culinary adventures in difficult to access locations. Tales from the urinal. The storyteller must say the words that create the sentences of his story. To speak of them, is to bring them to life. Stories that were experienced alone, when he was unable yet to speak the language, when he did not know local customs, before relationships were forged. Stories that arose out of his journey of confusion to understanding to adaptation.

When the night is over, the storyteller will go on with his daily routine. One day he will meet another storyteller. A few words exchanged, common ground revealed between one and the other. These two storytellers recognize each other, the journey behind them, and the one ahead. Their stories weave a web of familiarity and each person is heard. Understood. Acknowledged.
